I am a dogA Tibetan dog from KyeguA few days before the earth shookAnd the mountains rumbled —sky darkenedstorm thundereddust rained. In the night when all were asleepI saw them on the marchDeities, gods, goddesses, angels and the spiritsThey quietly left our townTails firmly tucked between their legs.I am a dogA Tibetan dog from KyeguIn the night I howledPeals of warningsUp the streetsDown the streetsIn Gesar Square —And that Chinese policemanChased me with his baton’Bi Zui! Si Gou!’ [1] he shouted.I wasn’t scared of his black batonI was terrified of the earthShe was angryThey drill into her bowelsWith iron hands and chemical dusts.I am a dogA Tibetan dog from KyeguThe day before the earth shookI howled the loudestUp the streetsDown the streetsMy throat went dry —That Chinese policeman saw me again’Wo Be Le Ni!’ [2] he shoutedAnd reached for his gun.I didn’t want to dieSo I fled up into the barren hills —There were no foxes, rabbits, deer, marmotsOnly vultures hovered on the cliffs.I am a dogA Tibetan dog from KyeguAfter the dust settled downI came back homeTo the streetsTo Gesar SquareTo rubbles and sobs—Kyegu is full of red flags nowA Chinese soldier with an oxygen bagGave me a bowl of rice puddingI sniffed at the repulsive sludgeAnd howled loud and clear.’I am a dogA Tibetan dog from KyeguI love yak bones.’
